Where is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
We have said that the Sian Ka'an reserve is in the heart of the Riviera Maya , in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo , on the Yucatan Peninsula . Now, to be more exact –and to show that it is in the heart of the Riviera Maya–, we have to say that Sian Ka'an is 10 kilometers from Tulum , just over 70 from Playa del Carmen and 140 from Cancun. Well, the kilometers are at the entrance of the reserve, because we are talking about more than half a million protected hectares –specifically, 528,147 Ha–.

In addition to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, there is also a Sian Ka'an Complex that also includes the Uaymil Flora and Fauna Protection Area and the Sian Ka'an Reefs Biosphere Reserve – the second largest coral reef in the world. The total complex covers an area of 652,193 hectares.
The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is one of our must-see places in the Riviera Maya .
How to get to Sian Ka'an
Since it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve , you can imagine that there are no bus lines –combi, truck or colectivo– that run through it very frequently. In fact, not very often, not very often. We spent a day visiting the transport companies in Tulum looking for one that went to Javier Rojo Gómez , a town within the reserve next to the Punta Allen lighthouse. Several of them told us that there was a bus that went there, but that it was very infrequent. Until we got to the company in question and they told us that it was no longer there: the bus had broken down due to so many bumps and they had stopped doing the route.
